Indian Paintbrush (Castilleja sp.) Type: Perennial. Where to Grow it: All regions. Bloom time and height: Spring 1-2 ft. tall. Sun/Shade: Full sun, partial shade. How to Grow it: Best in late Fall. The seeds are very small and should be sown directly on the soil surface to 1/16" depth. Keep soil moist. Adapted to well drained areas in full sun. Not the easiest variety to cultivate, but the lure of such magnificent flowers certainly compensates for the effort. Does not transplant well. Requires a period of time to become established. Etc: Legend tells of a young Native American brave who after having difficulty in painting a brilliant sunset asked the Great Spirit for assistance. He was given an array of paintbrushes dripping with the most beautiful vivid colors. Once the painting was complete, the paintbrushes were magically transformed into lovely wildflowers, hence Indian Paintbrush. A Northern Rockies classic.
