California Poppy...with golden-yellow petals as delicate as tissue paper, the Poppy adorns hillsides from late winter through late spring. This stunning annual blossoms open with the morning sun and closes when dusk falls. Poppies have lacy light-green leaves, the flowers have four petals and numerous stamens in the center. Spanish settlers called the poppy copa de oro, or "cup of gold". Botanically known as Eschscholtzia, for Johann Eschscholtz a Russian professor of medicine who visited California with a plant-expedition team in 1815. Native Americans ate the leaves and used its roots as a pain-killer.
