Red Columbine...amid the alpine meadows dwells one of the rarest of American wildflowers, the graceful Wild Red Columbine. A native wildflower found throughout the United States. It is a member of the large Ranunculaceae, or buttercup, family. In the East, Aquilegia canadensis flourishes from Nova Scotia to Florida. The western Red Columbine, a similar variety is named Aquilegia formosa. Both share the nodding heads, red petals and yellow sepals. Latin-named "Columba", or dove, for its resemblance to the bird of peace. Poet, R.H. Barham wrote, "Flowers such as Eden never knew."
