Sow wild iris seeds outdoors in fall (best) or early spring in sun to part shade with moist, well-drained soil. Iris seed often needs a cold, moist period to sprout, so fall sowing lets winter do the work; for spring sowing, chill seeds in a barely damp paper towel in the fridge for 8–12 weeks before planting. Scatter seeds, then cover lightly (about 1/8 inch) and gently press for good seed-to-soil contact. Keep the soil evenly moist (not soggy). Germination can be slow and uneven—often weeks to months—so don’t give up. Once seedlings are a few inches tall, thin to about 12 inches apart. Keep watered during the first season; plants usually take 1–2+ years to bloom from seed.
