Direct sow Mexican poppy seeds in early spring after your last frost (or fall in mild climates) in full sun with well-drained, lean soil. Loosen the top 1–2 inches of soil, scatter seeds, then cover very lightly (about 1/8 inch) and press in. Water gently to keep the surface lightly moist until germination in about 7–21 days, then taper to deeper, less frequent watering. Thin seedlings to 8–12 inches apart. Poppies dislike root disturbance, so avoid transplanting if possible. Once established, they’re fairly drought-tolerant—too much fertilizer or water can reduce blooms.
